Type 2 diabetes is a lifelong disease that evolves when the pancreas can’t make enough insulin or when the body’s tissues become nonabsorptive to insulin. Type 2 is the most common type of diabetes.

Insulin assists sugar (glucose) in entering cells where it is then used for energy. It also works to help the body store extra sugar in muscle, fat and liver cells. The way insulin works in a healthy body is to provide this sugar so that is can be released and used for energy when it is needed. When someone has diabetes, the disease prevents the proper absorption and use, which can change an individual’s overall health.

When insulin is not available or not used in the proper way, blood sugar elevates to an unsafe level. If your blood sugar remains high for a number of years, the blood vessels and nerves throughout the body may become damaged. You will be at risk for heart, eye, nerve, blood vessel and kidney disease. Blood sugar is capable of rising to an unsafe level even before diabetes symptoms occur.

Type 2 can develop at almost any age, although most diabetes occurs during adulthood. Implementing a healthy lifestyle, diet and regular exercise can help in the prevention of many health challenges. Whatever your exercise equipment and lifestyle choice, you should always visit your doctor regularly and discuss all of your concerns including diabetes.
